Question by qpuncturist: Which domain name should be used for a blog?
Hi,

I will be releasing a product soon and already have a domain name chosen for it.

Should my blog have a different domain name from the product websites or should I choose to post the blog on the same one?

I thought that if I use a different name it will throw people off and be even more objective, even though a blog is probably mostly subjective!!

Best answer:

Answer by Dino
You can use any domain name but its name should be related to your business. more information abut it you can find at http://www.urlstate.com

Question by PO: What is the least expensive way to register a domain name? How long does it last? Can I choose my host later?
I’d like to register a domain name. I’m not going to use it for anything right now; I just want to reserve it for my website in the future (possibly a couple years or more from now).

So, what’s the cheapest way, and how long does it last? If I register it at one site, am I “locked in” to using that site to renew the registration when it expires?

And, am I locked into that site to host my content when I’m ready? In other words, can I choose to register my domain on one site and choose a completely different site to host the content?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by John
Make it a generic name such as Google. or

serachwebhostshotelsuniswallpapersbanksproductssmsfreescriptssoftwarebookscelebsmovies.com

That domain would suit your website because it tells the viewer what the site is about and you would have the biggest domain ever so you would be more popular.

Before you purchase your domain name please give some thought to the following:

1) It is common practice to use your site name as your domain name. If your site is known as Netforge then use netforge.net.au as an example

2) Generic names – if you can select a generic domain name then that is fantastic. food.com.au for example, however it is likely that they are already gone. Finding a generic domain name on your particular niche may also be helpful eg. healthyfood.com.au

3) Hyphenated Names – I do not recommend the use of hyphenated names, particularly when it is a name close to your competetors. It is too easy to forget the hyphen and you may end up sending your hard earned traffic to your competitors site.

4) If the .com or .com.au extension is not available then consider the alternative TLD ( Top level domain types) such as .net or .biz.

If your domain name has already been registered then approach the owner and ask if they’ll sell it to you. They may accept as little as 0. the worst that can happen is they say no.

5) Plurals. Often a domain name will be taken in the singular choice of the word but available in the plural. This comes down to personal choice but beware you do not end up sending traffic to a competitor.

6) Short or Long domains – Short domain names are preffered because they are more memorable to people. Longer names are beneficial to search engines like google who look for keywords in your domain title

7) I am often asked which TLD to pick - .com, .com.au , .net etc No domain name type is given preference by the search engines but please consider that some search engines such as Google, have local searches e.g www.google.com.au which do allow searching of local sites.

Some customers also get re-assurance when they see a local TLD because they know they are dealing with a local company.

My advice is to register all of them!

Variations – If your prefered domain name is not available then it may be worthwhile trying a prefix. (domains.com) eg mydomains.com or suffix (domains.com) eg domains4u.com etc

Article by Justin Walton

Despite the fact that the economy feels a little bit shaky still and not as many people are getting into the adventurous spirit of entrepreneurism right now, there are plenty of businesses still starting up. And for those who are seasoned professionals, the realm of the world wide web looks like a truly appealing way to get on board with something new, to start to take interest in different types of projects, and to generally have a better time taking on a new sort of project. For those who are going the route of beginning a business in the real life or a business in the virtual life, the fact of the matter is that an online presence is increasingly important. And for that, a great website and a well-picked domain name is key.

For those who are making these kinds of big choices for the first time, here are five things to keep in mind when deciding on which domain names are the absolute best, and which don’t particularly work. By knowing what mistakes to avoid, it’s easier to get on the fast track towards a successful time with a new business, especially one that’s going to depend on the presence of a website a lot.

#1 – People tend to forget things that are too long. And this includes web addresses, so don’t get overly creative with something flawy, esoteric, and ultimately, far too easy to forget. It means losing visitors, and that really does matter.

#2 – It’s tough to ever pull off an underscore in this day and age. Domain names aren’t supposed to have underscores, but they once did. These days, however, a business doesn’t want to make it more complicated for someone to find a way to access the content, considering the fact that it would mean someone actually thinking that a contemporary company might actually be interested in using an underscore seriously.

#3 – Grabbing the .com is always well-advised. While people do sometimes go to Google first or think to plug in the .net ending, the traditional way of accessing content on the web these days is the .com, and for this, it makes sense to get in on a URL that can make that happen.

#4 – It’s important to see what one HERF could lead to. A “herf” is when someone misspells something or messes up HTML, and for those who accidentally throw in an extra letter to a businesses’ URL, it’s key to know where they could possibly land. Make sure that the competition doesn’t have a .com that’s too similar, or it might be that business will be lost in the interweb ether.

#5 – Consistency is key. Don’t pick a URL that has nothing to do with the name of the business and expect that people are going to know to type it in, even if it does happen to be a particularly catchy phrase. It’s not a good idea to confuse the public like that. Especially for those businesses who are just starting out.

WordPress hosting for blogs is just one of the many ways that businesses get out there and make things work. Whether it’s business email or some other bells and whistles, make sure that a site designed to represent something crucial is well-formed.

I would like to set up a blog that will reach out to the general public and so I was wondering about the importance of choosing names. I know that people are more likely to type in searching generic words, but will the domain name really have an effect on the amount of people that will land on my site?

Answer by Colanth
If the blog is interesting, you won’t be able to keep people away. If it’s not, no name is going to drive them to it. Some of the most popular blogs have some of the lamest names. No one reads a blog to see what its name is. You could call it ‘blah’ or ‘The Daily Blah’ and, if it’s really interesting, you could run out of your monthly bandwidth in a week. give it a really great name, and be completely boring in content, and you won’t need bandwidth.

(Most people don’t find a blog by doing a web search, they hear about it or see a reference to it on another blog they read.)

The article is in continuation to Know-How about Domain – I. The previous article discuss about defining domain name and how to choose a domain name. Now this article will talk about the step ahead.

How to register a domain name?

Choose your domain/website name and the desired extension (.com/.net/.in/.au)

Check the availability of your domain name at any domain availability search tool (http://www.whoisresult.com/)

Get your domain booked with reliable domain provider/registrar.

How to see your domain expiry date?

Enter your domain name (abc123.com) at http://www.whoisresult.com/
It will show whole information regarding that domain name including expiration date

What are sub domains?

A sub domain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example: http://news.znetindia.com/is a sub domain of main domain www.znetindia.com

Domain Renewal

As we renew many of our services on yearly/monthly basis. Similarly domain has to be renewed on their expiration. You can book a particular domain name for a year or any number of years you wish of. As that time passes you can renew the domain with the same provider or you can change your domain provider too.

Domain Parking

In domain parking, whenever a customer’s website is under construction then in that case a domain is parked. It is the common practice by hosting or domain registration companies to put their logo and link until the site is up.

Domain Forwarding

It is useful when you want your multiple domains/websites to direct at a single domain/website.

Let’s take an example: You have domains – test.com, test.net, test1.com and you want all of them to direct at test.com. It means when people type test.net, test1.com he/she will automatically gets directed to test.com after setting domain parking.

I’m really bad at choosing a good domain name that is simple, relevant & not complicated. The website that I want to create is going to contain my artwork, photography & comics. I didn’t want to use my own name because it’s too boring & common. I can’t think of any good names for an art site… Any suggestions please?
