Question by stephenbisback: Which web hosting is the best out of these 4 options?
I’ve already decided to use Godaddy for domain registry, but I can’t decide on a web-hosting package/service. I’ve had these recommended to me so far:

Bluehost – the most recommended I’ve heard of

Max-Hosting

Bravenet

Webs

Any advice/suggestions?

What happens if someone provide false WHOIS information?

Question by ocean: What happens if someone provide false WHOIS information?
I’ve seen some websites where the domain owner provides fake/fictional whois details.

Because their contact details are incorrect, can their domain be withheld without notice? Or will their domain registry give them notice to make the neccessary amendments?

How can I add my Windows Media Center to a domain without re-installing?

April 21st, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries 2 Comments »

Question by MrLobito: How can I add my Windows Media Center to a domain without re-installing?
I would like to add my Windows Media Center to my domain without having to reinstall. I went to the System Properties and the “Network ID” button is disabled, and when I click to change the name the Domain radio button is disabled allowing me to only change the Workgroup Name.

I checked online and the only solutions I found was to reinstall and specify to work on a domain. Please help me to add even if it is with a hack on the registry, I don’t want to reinstall.

there is registry key which is set during install, which tells windows domain or no domain. There is an instruction online on how to flip it from 0 to 1 to allow domain joining. Google it… But B4 u do anything, BACKUP your HARD DRIVE!!!

HOW TO BACK ORDER DOMAIN NAMES

April 15th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries No Comments »

Article by Tanya Smith

Many times it happens that people want to obtain a certain domain name but they cannot do it because it is already owned by someone else. In such cases the domain registry back orders the domain name so that they can acquire it for their client as soon as the domain name expires. Back Ordering a Domain Name means blocking or booking a domain name so that the person can buy it as soon as it expires or as soon as the current owner decides to sell it. However, there are some situations when a domain name cannot be back ordered. One cannot back order a domain name if the original owner of the domain name has renewed it before the deletion period. It cannot be back ordered if it is in the temporary hold status. Domain names that are in a dispute because of trademark issues also cannot be back ordered.

You do not own a domain name for a lifetime when you register it in your name. Domain names can be registered in your name only for a certain period of time. This could be between two to 10 years. After this period, the domain name needs to be renewed.

Many times people may either forget to renew their domain names or may just not renew it because they do not want the domain name any more. In such a situation, the domain name enters a hold period. This is the time people wait for as after this the domain is up again for sale. Companies start competing for domain names even before their expiry date is up.

You can back order any domain name regardless of whether it is new or old. However, there is no guarantee that you may get to own the domain name as the current owner of the domain name may either renew it or may have himself put it on hold.

Back ordering a domain name is very simple. The best thing to do is to back order it when it is just about to expire. You need to gather as much information as possible about the domain name and then back order it just when it is about to expire. The tough part comes after that when you need to acquire the domain name. This is because you will be competing with many other people who may have back ordered the same domain name<a>.

There are certain things that can happen once a domain name expires: 1. There could be a private auction on the domain name if there is more than one company that has back ordered the domain name. This is called Private Domain Name Auction. 2. However, if you are the only person who has back ordered the domain name, then you will get it instantly.

If back ordering a domain name still seems difficult to you, then the best thing to do would be to hire a domain name registrar who will keep an eye on the domain names and take care of the back ordering process.

Improve Your Product Sales Registering a Domain

April 12th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries No Comments »

Article by Justin Walton

It’s hard to imagine life without the internet now, especially since most people use it everyday to enhance shopping, research and communication. You’d really almost be handicapped without it. The same could apply to your business as well. Without a web presence of some sort, you’d be putting it at a marked disadvantage against your competition. Fortunately, it’s easy to get a web site up and running after you pay a visit to the right domain registry site. In the end, doing business with them could increase your product sales significantly.

The whole process can be a bit confusing at first, but once you get up to speed on the general concepts behind what’s going on it’ll be much easier to understand why you need a domain registry site. The internet is essentially a very large network of computers and it allows data to be exchanged fairly easily. The web is a layer on top that allows for web pages to be transferred back and forth. Web pages are what make the internet easy to use for people because they allow for pictures, video and straightforward navigation. In order to go to a web site though, you have to know its address on the internet. These addresses are long numbers that uniquely identify a site, but they are next to impossible for humans to memorize. That’s where domain names comes into play. They allow you to map a name that’s easy for humans to remember to a number that the internet understands. As a crude example, if you had a site that was located at internet address ?123.456.789? you could have ?http://www.mysite.com? map to that particular address. In the end, it would be too difficult to use the internet without this kind of name translation service in place. Therefore, it’s essential that you make use of it if you want to have a strong web presence.

Your choice of domain name is important too because some names are easier to remember than others. Besides the name though, your site needs to have the right content as well. There are essentially two kinds of web sites that can be made: a web site that only provides information about your business to customers or a site that also provides a way for customers to buy your products online. Both kinds are helpful because they can establish trust with your audience. Either kind of page will take a bit of technical knowledge to make, so you might want to either hire a firm to make the site or use a program that makes the creation process almost automatic.

The final piece of the puzzle is hosting. The web pages that are created are going to take up space and need to be stored online somewhere. Often times though, the same place that allowed you to register your domain name will also feature a hosting package of some sort. This will allow you to hit two birds with one stone. All you’d have to do is give them your site’s content and they’ll make sure that anyone who directs their browser to your web site’s name will be able to access the information there.

The first step towards building a strong online presence is web domain registration. Be on the lookout for sites that allow you to get Hosting and Domains at the same time, which will make the whole process that much easier for you.

How to register and pay for a dot UK domain name from overseas?

April 11th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries No Comments »

Question by kcarter_99: How to register and pay for a dot UK domain name from overseas?
I have a client. He wants me to take over his hosting and DNS management. I do this for a living. Know plenty.

BUT: We have a problem. His domain with a dot UK extension was registered by a UK registry that now informs us that they can accept payment ONLY from a UK addressed credit card.

My client has moved to Thialand now and does not have a UK credit card, nor do I.

I need the name of a good registrar who can fulfull the following needs:

1. Ability to pay for dot UK name using Thai / Foreign credit card.

2. Ability to process DNS transfer from existing registrar

3. Easy to use and understand user interface

Any suggestions would be very, very welcome indeed because I am somewhat lost in this matter just now.

Cheers and Thanks
I am NOT trying to scam anybody thanks buddies. I live in Thailand. We have a lot of expatriated UK folks here. Many had sites back home with dot uk domain names. They want me to take over web design, web hosting and DNS management. This is what my company do for a living, you see? NO SCAM. Just want some info please.

Can you embed your gift registry into your wedding website?

March 30th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries No Comments »

Question by Za: Can you embed your gift registry into your wedding website?
Hi everyone,

My fiance and I are adding to our wedding website. We know it is common practice to post a link to the registry source, in our case Target and Kohl’s. What we really want to do is have a scroll through list that people can look at under our domain name. I was wondering if any of you have done this, know how to do this or if its even possible. I’ll be watching this closely, and award points to the best answer!

Thanks!

The registry data is maintained on the servers of the individual stores. You’d have to get a printout and hard code it onto your website. Seems pretty tacky to me though

Is it necessary to register a domain through a provider?

March 29th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries 5 Comments »

Question by : Is it necessary to register a domain through a provider?
I have been researching how to get register a domain name for quite some time with no previous information on the subject, and a lot of the things I have read just confuse me.

I just want to know if it is necessary to buy the domain through a company (ex: go daddy), or if there is an official place that I can get it from without having to depend on a service? Is there a national registry anywhere?

Best answer:

Answer by Andrew S
There are central authorities that maintain the authroitative list for each top-level domain and you can deal with those directly if you like. However for most purposes you are better off going through an intermediary – you will find it easier because they simpliy a lot of the administrivia for you and it will almost certainly be a lot cheaper too – the amount the central authorities charge recognised agents for a domain registration is a tiny fraction of what they typically charge Joe Public, so even with their mark up you are usually well ahead. Regardless of precisely who you go to, whether it is the central registrar or an agent, you will have to go through somebody to register the domain name.

Any domain name registrars offer payment via Amazon Payments (Simple Pay or Checkout)? ?

March 27th, 2012 dean Posted in Domain Registries No Comments »

Question by hotsy t: Any domain name registrars offer payment via Amazon Payments (Simple Pay or Checkout)? ?
I’ve been making money through Mturk, and I want to use that money to purchase some domain names. I’ve been looking for two days to find domain name registrars that accept Amazon Payments. It seems like they all take Paypal and major credit cards only. Does anyone know of any domain registry sites that accept Amazon Payments?

Best answer:

Answer by Kelly W
I have also been looking for someone that accepts Amazon Payments. Other than Amazon.com I can’t find anyone. I even checked Target and endless.com since they run their websites and they don’t accept it either. I think it may be because it is so new still.
