Godaddy how does domain transfer work?

October 8th, 2011 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

Question by CafeSchultz: Godaddy how does domain transfer work?
I have sold my website on ebay and I now want to transfer ownership to the new owner.

Could you please explain step-by-step what I need to do on godaddy?

This is what I did. But apparently I did something wrong.
I logged in into godaddy –> account –> Manage Domains –> Pending Account Changes. My domain is listed there. I entered an ID and a Code that my buyer had received, but I got an error message saying that:

No updates were made.

Gaining account can not be the same as the losing account.

What have I been doing wrong? It would be great if you could help. It’s probably quite easy to do, but I am too stupid for domain transfer.

Call godaddy’s phone support and they will walk you through what you need to do. They can see your account and will be able to tell you what is stopping the transfer from going through.

Good Luck!

During domain transfer processing, can people browse the website on the domain?

September 6th, 2011 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

Question by A A: During domain transfer processing, can people browse the website on the domain?
I heard domain transfer takes 5-7days.

Answer by Host Mid
If the website transfer is done in the correct manner, then your website will be online all the time. When you transfer your website files from a web hosting provider to another, you will need to update your DNS records. DNS propagation can take up to 72 hours, during the DNS propagation time some of your visitors will be directed to the old site.

To avoid your visitors being directed to the old site during the DNS propagation, you can create an A record to redirect all visitors to the new server, you can also create a MX record so your emails will be delivered to the new server and not old one. This way whether your visitors are directed to the old or new site, you would not lose any updates during the DNS propagation.

Could I transfer a yahoo domain name to godaddy hosting?

August 18th, 2011 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

Question by Domenic: Could I transfer a yahoo domain name to godaddy hosting?
I want to purchase a domain name from yahoo and I already have 3 year hosting from godaddy, would it be possible to transfer the domain name to godaddy’s hosting account that I own? I am 99% sure the answer is yes but I don’t want to start spending money everywhere without being sure.

Best answer:

Answer by Hosting Hunter
Yes, you should be able to configure the DNS settings at Yahoo to point to the hosting server at Godaddy, if the domain registration purchased at Yahoo allows for “domain/DNS management”.

I am not sure if Yahoo will have free domain/DNS management or you need to add that to your cost. If you use something like Dotster, you need to add the domain tools when purchasing the domain.

How to Choose, Register or Transfer a Domain Name

August 16th, 2011 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

Article by H Drost

Copyright 2002 Herman Drost Every professional business should be keeping up with the demands and needs of its customers, if it is to survive. One ofthe essential tools of any business these days is to have aprofessional web site. This begins with choosing and registeringa domain name that will clearly identify and brand your businessonline for many years to come, so you need to choose wisely. How to choose a domain name1. If you want your web site to have an added advantage in thesearch engines, think of a domain name that includes keywordsvisitors would search for in the main search engines. 2. Make a list of all the possible names that would suit yourbusiness (i.e. isitebuild.com contains resources for buildingyour own web site or getting one built). Use http://www.nameboy.com forresearching domain names. NameBoy will generate domain namesbased on the keywords you enter. If the dotcom name you want isnot available, create a longer name that describes your businessor use names that include hyphens (i.e. ihost-websites.com) 3. If possible, keep your domain name short so it is easy tospell and easy to remember. Take into account someone mayremember the name but forget there is a hyphen in it ? you thenmiss out on those potential customers. 4. If the dotcom name is not available, try the other newabbreviations such as.BIZ.US,.INFO,.TV. These are not aspopular as.COM, however you may get closer to the name youwant. How to register a domain name1. Any company that sells domain names must be registeredand accredited with iCann – The Internet Corporation forAssigned Names and Numbers (http://www.icann.org).You can get a domain name for under from Godaddy.com.Read carefully what?s on their site as you go through theregistration process. It?s easy to inadvertently sign up for other services you don?t need. 2. Register your domain name in your own name, not someoneelse?s. Sometimes your host may do this for you. This couldcause you problems in the future, should you decide to transferyour domain to another hosting company. 3. Renewal – you have had your site on the Web for a year, salesare pouring in when suddenly, your site disappears ? it won?tshow up anymore! What happened? Well, you forgot to renew yourdomain name. Hopefully this will never happen to you! When you sign up for a new domain name, make sure your domainname registrar will send a reminder when your domain name isabout to expire. 4. When asked about DNS server (domain name system) or NameServer information, insert your Primary Name Server andSecondary Name Server information ? ask your future Web Hostingservice for this information, if you don?t have it handy. If you haven?t chosen a Web Host, then park your domain namewith your domain name registrar (this is a temporary location tostore your domain until you are ready to have it hosted). How to transfer a domain name. There may be couple of reasons why you would want to transfer:-You parked your domain name and have now found a Web Hostto upload your site to.-You are not happy with the service or are paying too much foryour current web host and want to switch to another. For an in-depth discussion on how to transfer a domain name ortransfer your web site to another Web Host, read my article ?Howto transfer your web site to another host without losing it?http://www.isitebuild.com/hosttransfer). A Great Tip for registering several domain names.Since domain names are so cheap these days (they used to cost /year), you can afford to own severaldomains and host several web sites. Most small sites use less than 5MB of hosting space, so you canhost several sites for a small price.(i.e. http://www.isitebuild.com/sitehosting.com) What are the benefits of doing this? Linking each of these web sites together and submitting them tothe search engines will increase your sites search engine rankings. It will also broaden the places visitors can access your business. Generating a continuous traffic flow leads to more sales. You have now implemented and solved one of your crucialmarketing strategies.

The Ins and Outs of Transferring a Domain Name

August 6th, 2011 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

Article by Sonia Day

The initial thought of transferring a domain name to another registrar can seem daunting. However, it only takes a few simple steps to gather the information you’ll need to go from one registrar to another.

First, select a new registrar, or “home” for your domain name. You can either use your web hosting company’s domain registrar or opt for a separate domain registrar. If you go with a domain registrar that doesn’t offer web hosting service, then the internet directory system (DNS) will be contacting them to locate your website when someone tries to access it. Many web hosts, however, now offer domain registrar services, so this may not be the lowest cost option. It may also be easier to have both your web host and domain name managed at the same location. If you’re still searching for a new registrar we recommend Bluehost, which offers a free domain name with your service. Now you’re ready for step number two.

Second, obtain your authorization code from your current registrar. It’s required by your new registrar for the domain name transfer. Sometimes all it takes is navigating to the proper page. You may need to use the search function to locate its storage place, or even call the registrar to request it in rare cases.

Third, ensure that the domain name is open to transfer. Sounds complicated, but changing the state of your domain name is usually managed from the same page you found your domain name. In worst cases you may need to use the search function or contact the registrar for help, but once this is done you’re allowed to begin the transfer.

Fourth, begin and accept the domain transfer. Once you’ve located the domain management or transfer tool on your new registrar’s site, you’ll be asked to enter the name of the domain and the authorization code. Then you’ll be asked to check the email address of the domain name – which is most likely the one you used to sign up. If you no longer have access to that address getting this step accomplished may be a bit more complicated, but doable. Just contact the registrar to explain what happened. This may take time to resolve. If you still have access to that account, however, you will simply click a link to “agree” to the transfer or receive a code that’ll be entered later to initiate the transfer. In anywhere from a few days to a few hours, the actual transfer will be complete.

But wait, you’re not done yet! Once the transfer is finished, be sure to verify that everything works. There’ll be no downtime for your site if everything goes smoothly. If not, you might see up to 48 hours of connection problems for some users as their DNS servers are updated, but from our experience these cases are rare. If everything works, congratulations! You’ve successfully moved your domain name.

Their experts have been evaluating web hosting service providers for years, and now they provide you with the most reliable results. They present the information in an easy to understand format that helps the consumer make the best choice.

How to Choose a Reliable Web Hosting Provider?

There are many websites which display a couple of web hosting companies as the best and leave people confused without being helpful. For most people, the problem with buying web space is that they don’t really know what they’re looking at when they buy it. They buy the first package they see, thinking they are all alike. To make things even more confusing, some hosting companies are cheating and lying to their customers!

First, take into consideration that web hosting is a global service. It does not matter what country you are located in. It is good to note that the cost of hosting services in most countries is generally a little more expensive in comparison to the same services in Canada and the United States. Specifically, American web hosts offer a much better value for money than any local hosting.

Transfer Domain Registration

December 17th, 2010 dean Posted in Domain Transfers No Comments »

For transfer of domain, you should apply to the gaining registrar, as it is responsible for the operation. It is the duty of the gaining registrar to ensure that the application for transfer by the domain owner is a valid one. The validation usually is in the form of an email sent to the admin contact that requires a reply. In some cases, however, signed faxes are used. Losing registrars these days may resort to ‘double-checking.’ In this case, they will perform additional security checks if you seek transfer from them. The losing registrars may ask you to reply to an email, or dispatch a notarized letter. After completion of the transfer, a year is always added to the end of the registration period.

If you have your names registered with a number of registrars, it will be better if you transfer them to one single registrar to make the domain management process much simpler. You should go for transfer as soon as you decide to do so. Or else, if the transfer application is not processed by the losing registrar on the domain’s expiry date, they can put your name “on hold” for non-payment resulting in more holes in your pocket. Usually, it takes ten working days (in some cases, not more than a couple of days) for most transfers to take place. Even then, you should ideally expect a month’s time to complete a transfer.

In case a transfer fails, most registrars will fully refund your money. However, others may charge some “administration fee” for failed transfers. Many losing registrars will insist on confirmation before authorizing transfers. This trend is growing these days, more so from the expensive registrars that are losing out. In a desperate bid to keep their market share in tact, they are taking recourse
