I want to grab a domain name that somebody else is currently using (the site looks empty and abandoned). I know the exact time when it will expire from looking at whois.net. Does that mean that immediately after that time the domain name is up-for-grabs, or is there a “grace period” offered to the site owner to renew the hosting contract? The hosting provider in this case is GoDaddy.com, if it makes any difference.

Most providers will give the old owner up to 30 days past the expy date to renew. They may pull the domain off line until payment is received, but they will wait the 30 days.

Used domain names are often auctioned off. It’s pretty rare to pick up a used name for the same price as a new one. Especially if the old site had a high traffic volume.
