There are a few sites , such as Dyndns.org who have a contract with the international name server agency which rules over all domain names.
You can suscribe to one of these sites and pay a monthly fee or more to own the domain name .
People made money because they cleverly registered domain names that are easy to remember or that should be used by people. But that doesn’t apply to company names (if you are not a company with the name of the domain that is) .
For example when the .eu (europe) domain was released some companies paid millions to own hotels.eu etc…
